CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Aug. 19, 2016 – The 2016 Inc. 5000 fast-growing private companies ranking includes 186 companies headquartered in the Carolinas. These top performing businesses are concentrated in Charlotte USA, home to 44 firms, and the combined Raleigh and Durham-Chapel Hill metros, also home to 44 firms.
Charleston, SC led other Carolinas metros with 23 companies named to the Inc. 5000, a very strong performance considering its size. Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, SC at 20 firms and Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point with 18 companies achieved double digit results.
Three Charlotte companies are on the 2016 Inc. 500 fastest-growing companies list. PLANIT Group, founded in 2010, reported $11.5 million revenue that resulted in its ranking as North Carolina’s fastest growing company and a #12 ranking nationally.
Torrent Consulting, located in Charlotte’s Center City and founded in 2012, reported $2.9 million revenue yielding a national ranking of #164. Tresata, located in Charlotte’s South End and founded in 2011, reported revenue of $5.4 million resulting in a national ranking of #256.
All three of Charlotte’s Inc. 500 companies are information technology and software businesses reflecting the region’s strong talent base in this sector. Each of the three companies, while headquartered in Charlotte, also operates offices in other U.S. cities.
Although Charlotte’s three fastest growing firms are newcomers to the Inc. ranking, the 44 companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 list include 35 that have earned recognition in prior years. Charlotte USA’s most frequently ranked business is Transportation Insight with nine (9) appearances on the list beginning in 2008. Headquartered in Hickory, NC and founded in 1999, the company operates in the Logistics & Transportation industry and reported $475 million revenue.
AccruePartners, in the Human Resources industry and founded in 2002, leads all metro Charlotte businesses with eight (8) appearances on the Inc. 5000 ranking.
AmWINS Group, in the Insurance industry and founded in 1998, has seven appearances and the distinction of being on the first Inc. 5000 list published in 2007.
The 44 Charlotte USA Inc. 5000 winners are geographically concentrated: 35 Mecklenburg County, two in each of Union County and York County (SC), one company located in each of Catawba, Gaston, Iredell, Rowan, and Lancaster (SC) counties.
The Inc. rankings classify all companies in one of 25 industry groups. The top Charlotte USA industries are Information Technology Services and Human Resources with six companies each. Other industries with significant representation include Software (5), Business Products & Services (4), Manufacturing (4), and Financial Services (3).
The annual Inc. 5000 fast-growing private companies ranking is a valuable measure of entrepreneurial performance. The Kauffman Index of Growth Entrepreneurship uses this
data as one element of its index (
www.kauffman.org). The Charlotte Entrepreneur Growth Report published in 2015 includes an in-depth review of Inc. 5000 performance for the Charlotte region compared to benchmark metros (ui.uncc.edu/data/partner/CEGR). Ventureprise will release an updated comparison of Inc. 5000 regional performance on August 24, 2016.
All revenue and other data is as reported by Inc. magazine in their 2016 ranking of the 5000 fastest-growing private companies (www.inc5000.com). The ranking is based on 3-year revenue growth. Company participation is voluntary so the list may exclude some high growth companies.
